Quick Steps to Locate Journal Articles on a subject

  • Use a database (electronic index)
  • Start with a broad subject
  • Use Boolean Operators (And, Or , Not) to narrow the search
  • If you find the perfect article, locate the subject headings/descriptors then search by them, or use the find more like this feature
  • Remember to refine by dates and/or peer review

Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to provide you with a starting point for your research. A good place to begin when needing supporting information, facts, quotes, and dates for your topic.

Finding basic information about your topic helps you to understand the broader context of your research.  This is particularly important at the beginning of your research if you are unfarmliar with your topic or uncertain how to narrow the focus of the subject.

Background information can supply: 

  1. Broad overview
  2. Main concepts
  3. Major dates and events
  4. Definitions of terms associated with the topic
  5. Names of people who are authorities in the subject field
  6. Keywords and subject-specific vocabulary terms that can be used for database searches
  7. Bibliographies that lead to additional resources

 

Types of resouces for background information :  Encyclopedias, Guides, Handbooks, Manuals, etc.  

Remote Access Instructions

OFF-CAMPUS ACCESS

After selecting a resource a  you will be asked for your Username and Password (this will authenticate you for a search session).  Use your EagleID.

  1. EagleID is the first 4 characters of your last name plus the last 4 digits of your Campus Wide I.D. (CWID) number. If your last name is 3 characters long or less, just use those letters. If your name has a special character, such as an apostrophe or space, omit the special character and just use the letters. See the examples below: 

    Jones, John / 123456789 à jone6789
    Lee, Kelly / 123456789 à Lee6789

    O'Brian, Carol / 123456789 à OBri6789

    Initial Password The initial Password is Tamut followed by the last four digits of your CWID number (example Tamut6789).

  2. Lastly, the authentication process uses "cookies" to remember that you are logged in for that session only. Once you close the browser, your session will terminate. It will be necessary to log in for each session.
     
  3. Self-Reset Password instructions.  Recommended to do this sooner rather than later.  Then you can self reset your password when you forget off campus and or during the weekend.
